Fitness to Drive Testing

If you have a long-term or serious medical condition or illness, you must consult your GP or specialist before driving.

You may need to get a medical assessment with a Neurologist to assess your fitness to drive, in order to renew or apply for a driver licence.

Safe driving is a demanding task that requires several intact neurological functions.

  • Visuospatial perception
  • Insight
  • Judgement
  • Attention and concentration
  • Comprehension
  • Reaction time
  • Memory
  • Sensation
  • Muscle power
  • Coordination
  • Vision

Impairment of any of these capacities may be caused by neurological disorders and therefore affect safe driving ability.

Neurological conditions that may affect your fitness to drive:

  • Dementia
  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Various other neurological conditions

At Canberra Neurology, we provide neurological Fitness to Drive assessments for patients referred to our clinic by their GP or other specialists. Please Contact Us to request this service with our reception team.
