What is a psychological or psychometric assessment?

A psychological assessment is a systematic process used by psychologists to understand an individual’s cognitive, social, psychological, and emotional functioning and behaviour.  It involves gathering information from multiple sources and integrating that information into professional conclusions and recommendations.

A psychological assessment may include one or more of the following:

I. Clinical interview - 30 minutes

It is a structured or semi-structured conversation designed to gather and clarify the information completed prior to the assessment session.  The purpose is to understand the client’s concerns, history, current functioning, and the context in which difficulties occur.

II. Cognitive screen - 30 minutes

A cognitive screen is a brief assessment used to identify whether a person may have difficulties in cognitive functioning that warrant further investigation.  The goal is to identify the presence or absence of cognitive impairment

  1. Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE-III)
  2. Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA), for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients
  3. Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS), for clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

III. Psychometric Tests - 60 minutes

These are standardized assessment tools designed to measure psychological constructs.  These tests will assess attention, memory, and thinking skills such as Verbal reasoning, Visual-spatial reasoning, Working memory, Processing speed and so on.

  • Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS Update), 30 minutes
  • Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS), selected items, 30 minutes
  • Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT-3), 30 minutes
  • Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog), 20 minutes
  • Dementia Rating Scale (DRS-2), 30 minutes

IV. Psychosocial and Mood Assessments

Psychological Symptom measures completed by the individual, prior to the assessment session in the waiting area.  These are self-report measures around mood and anxiety and other mental health screening measures.

  1. Geriatric Depression Scale 15 (GDS-15), a short screen for low mood, completed by the client
  2. Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS) or Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI), a screen for anxiety, completed by the client
  3. Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline (IQCODE), completed by the carer, who rates changes in the client’s memory and thinking over time
  4. Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living screen (ADL and IADL), completed by the client and carer, looking at how independently the client manages everyday tasks
  5. World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), completed by the client, carer, or both, covering overall day-to-day functioning

V. Adaptive / Independent Functioning Assessment

Assessment of adaptive and / or independent functioning through questionnaires completed by the client and carers prior to the assessment session.
